Tomography
Tomography is one of the most widely used forms of medical imaging. In reality it is just a fancy x-ray. However it is one of the best ways for doctors to diagnose a number of diseases. This is because it allows the doctors to see things that wouldn't show up on a regular x-ray. In particular it allows doctors a complete view of all of the tissue in a specific area.
Tomography is a widely used medical imaging technique. Most people are more familiar with the term CT scan which simply stands for conventional tomography. This is really just an x-ray that is taken using special equipment so that they can get a cross sectional image. This allows doctors to get scans of not only bones but also organs and soft tissue. It also provides a much greater level of clarity than would be provided by a regular x-ray. This makes it much easier for doctors to diagnose diseases that they otherwise wouldn't be able to see.
Tomography is widely used for examining the chest and abdomen area. This is because it allows the doctor to see the entire structure of the area, the bones, organs and tissue. Tomography is also commonly used to diagnose cancer. The reason for this is that it makes it very easy to determine exactly where the tumor is located and how big it is. Other common uses are to look for blood clots and aneurysms. CT scans also work well in when diagnosing injuries to the spine and limbs since they allow the doctor to see all of the bones and the soft tissue in one picture.
A CT scan is similar to an x-ray but it is also different in a number of ways. When you get an x-ray the ray is simply aimed at the area that the doctor wants to see with a photographic plate behind it. This provides a picture of the specific area. With a CT scan you will lay on a table while the X-ray is on one side of you and a detector on the other. During this procedure the x-ray and the detector will rotate around you while the table moves through the middle. This allows them to get a complete cross section as well as cover the entire area that they want to look at.
There are of course some very small risks to tomography. The biggest is the exposure to radiation. There is a very small chance that you will get cancer from the exposure to the radiation but this risk is extremely small. Slightly more likely is a radiation burn but even this is very rare. Regardless of the risks the fact is that the benefits far outweigh the dangers. A CT scan is simply the best way to diagnose a number of diseases that otherwise would be very difficult to spot.
